Fallout: New Vegas Lead Teases A Comeback—But Only Under One Condition
For years Fallout: New Vegas has been a favorite among fans of that series. In the aftermath of (Bethesda’s) successful reboot of everyone’s favorite post-apocalyptic RPG, Fallout: New Vegas was created by Obsidian Entertainment to offer a new/old take on a world torn asunder. For being a distinct title in setting, story aopand tions it ron over many player’s hearts. Hit the next page for pros, cos, and conclusions…Since then fans have been begging for an actual sequel or at least another game from Obsidian.
Josh Sawyer, one of the visionaries behind Fallout: New Vegas gave his thoughts on a return to the series just recently. Sawyer, who wore many hats during the development of New Vegas responded to this in a Q&A session and described what would have to happen for him to even think about working on another Fallout game.
“Yeah,” was Sawyer’s response when asked about the possible comeback. “[On] any project, it’s about ‘What are we doing, and what are the parameters that we’re working under — What am I allowed to do or not allowed to do? ” I said, “‘Look at this IP and particularly one that I worked on in my past,’ what’s the thing way more now than when it was first created? Even if those constraints are just ridiculously restricting, it’s not all that attractive because who wants to work on something where the one thing they want to explore isn’t within bounds?
While Sawyer’s answer may sound peculiar, it reflects his dedication to delivering a truly standout project with each new endeavor. The creative freedom to try new ideas, and push boundaries is vital for him. This is most apparent in the world of RPGs, where player choice and narrative complexity are tent poles. But with no innovation, and nowhere to experiment and explore, the draw of revisiting an old IP loses much of its shine.

Fallout: New Vegas Legacy
Originally developed on the same engine that powered Fallout 3, New Vegas tweaked and built upon what Bethesda had to offer quite well. It brought us iconic characters, epic storylines, and the ability to make choices that felt like they mattered. Besides, the record-breaking achievement was so great that even there is talk of setting up its popular New Vegas location for the upcoming live-action Fallout series.
Naturally, since Obsidian managed to do something special with their take on Fallout (this was years before Bethesda realized they could just copy all the Fallout 1+2 stuff and put it in a first-person game,) fans are excited about this prospect. Sawyer’s remarks, however, hint that any theoretical follow-up would have to allow him and his team as much freedom as they had last time around with New Vegas. It is hard to see a return without that freedom.
What Could the Future Hold?
If the stars align, and Bethesda returns to one of their games years later building on where they left off (like has happened in previous teams,) we very well could see a new Obsidian + Bethesda collaboration. But any collaboration should have the sort of creative tentacles that Sawyer treasures. With Bethesda fans eagerly awaiting their next big step into the Fallout franchise (for example, titles like Starfield) speculation around a New Vegas sequel is at an all-time high.
At the end of the day whether or not Obsidian ever re-visits the Wasteland is anyone’s guess. But if they do, it will obviously be done in-house with a vision that challenges the borders of what an RPG can end up being. For now, all that fans can do is hope the stars align for a return to the sun-scorched roads of New Vegas.
