As of August 30, Star Wars Outlaws has now officially landed in the galaxy and that means fans of one of Geekdom’s favorite film franchises have been ( fingers crossed ) taking Ubisoft’s latest for a spin.
Set in the galaxy far, way before the rise of Skywalker (or anything from Episode I onward), this story doesn’t focus on those preachy Jedi. Instead, we meet Kay Vess.
The developers seem to be sticking closely to the authenticity of these titles, whether that will have a positive or negative effect remains unseen through initial reception.
Talking to GamesRadar+, Lead Concept Artist Samuel De Vos and Associate Art Director Marthe Jonkers spill on how they designed Star Wars Outlaws with the spirit of the original trilogy in mind.

Describing the kind of development process needed to adhere to fit with that classic Star Wars feel, De Vos said: “It’s one of the most treasured IPs on planet Earth and so creating anything authentic within it takes a lot more special care.
We went back and looked at what had originally inspired George Lucas (Star Wars creator)…by [conceptual designer] Ralph McQuarrie, to make sure that anything we came up with pretty much every memory would bring us right the same place….It was all about nostalgia.
For Star Wars Outlaws, which will take place around the original trilogy era of episodes IV-VI, the team approached it with a clear intent to echo those unique elements of the universe.

De Vos explained that while the game was never intended to be a combat sim, there were plenty of influences from film and events in the 1960s and early ’70s used as reference points when designing how it plays.
Jonkers continued, “We needed to be true to the trilogy. We wanted to have it where when you play Outlaws… you are stepping into the movies themselves, and becoming part of them — or at least that was our intention for what kind [of] experience we were creating out there.
What remains to be seen is if authenticity connects with the fans. Star Wars Outlaws has had a mixed reception since its launch, with some praising the game and others criticizing it for bugs issues. Insofar as prospects for its future it depends on the upcoming DLCs that will follow to expand Kay Vess’s story and continue to flesh out more stories far beyond among stars.
While the game has received a mixed response, it is quite obviously more than just lip service to Star Wars and instead shows Ubisoft doing its best to pay homage to that original world.
While that may challenge players’ investment in the game’s story, their dedication to honoring the soul of the franchise ultimately reflects a level of loyalty and love for themselves-a thing any MizArph would have been grateful for.
