Project T

Well, it comes as a shock to everyone but Behaviour Interactive has officially canceled Project T that it teased earlier on as the next big thing based on the Dead by Daylight franchise and now it’s no more. From an innovative new addition to the Dead By Daylight universe, it soon became a cancelled title leaving fans to wonder what happened along the way.

Project T

Project T: The Big Idea

Announced in May, Project T was set to bring Dead by Daylight into the realm of a 1-4-player co-op PvE shooter. Taking place in The Entity’s Realm, aka The Backwater, a large land of unexplored space, the game hinted that players were to play as “trespassers”, a set of daring survivors willing to brave dangerous terrain.

Dead by Daylight, and its developers behind the game at Behaviour Interactive, were so excited for Project T that Behaviour called it “the next evolution to asymmetrical video games.” Behaviour even instituted an Insiders Program, allowing anyone a chance to participate in the development of Dead Cell.

What Stumbled and Makes One Fumble

Nonetheless, enthusiasm for Project T was temporarily stymied following its first phase of closed playtests. Although the game was original, testers found it had a lack of fun. In a recent statement from Behaviour, it claimed that this early feedback was one of the primary reasons the project was ditched.

Ne voulant pas en rester là avec les joueurs, nous avons pensé à inclure ces derniers le plus tôt possible dans Project T sous la forme du programme Insiders », a poursuivi Behaviour. Our site was able to collect first feed-back on core design & gameplay with this solution.“After the July playtest, we conducted a thorough internal Risk Balance analysis, covering everything from the product itself to its commercial prospects.”

Player feedback was mixed, however the net results were still deemed a… PM’s relief framework fell short of satisfactory. The risk assessment found Project T did not have enough completed work to sustain the business case.

Fallout and Looking Forward

Project T’s cancellation also signifies one of the many content-making high times for Dead by Daylight. It really is a cornerstone in horror gaming, going on to show that multiplayer could be done well with A- L-L future (and now current) consoles versions of the title.

Dead by Daylight continues to be successful and is available now on PC, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, PS5, Android, iOS and Nintendo Switch. Fans will also have a Five Nights at Freddy’s crossover to anticipate, due to release in 2025.

The failure of Project T hasnt put a damper on Behaviour’s flagship endeavour. It’s very clear that the studio is committed to delivering a tense and exciting horror proposition here, so one can only assume Project T was axed in order to dedicate resources elsewhere to make Dead by Daylight even better at its core.

What’s Next for Fans?

As disappointing as it is to hear about the cancellation of Project T for eager fans out there who are always on the lookout for new content, Behaivour Interactive does deserve some spotlight for this since it does show us they at least care enough about how their products are made. This mindset of engaging with their fans so early and diligently checking for risks are just indicative of how committed the developers behind what will hopefully be some new fan favourite games.

In the meantime, Dead by Daylight fans can look forward to plenty more support for the original game going forward. Fans of the horror genre might also want to keep an eye on what other projects Behaviour Interactive may be involved in now.

Not all of those will land a mark, in the world of game development. But the experiences of Project T could pave the way for some even more interesting projects in future. In the meantime, Dead by Daylight will continue to be a go-to entry point for horror enthusiasts.
