Recently, the head of PlayStation Studios Hermen Hulst appeared on the Official PlayStation podcast and teased what could be in store for one of PlayStation’s most beloved characters. What is certain, though, says Hulst is that Astro Bot “is very much going to become a cornerstone brand for our strategy.”
Released just last week, Astro Bot’s latest adventure has been causing quite a sensation in the gaming community. The reaction to the game has been outstanding, with even some telling as this is a potential Game of The Year nominee.
It has already picked up tonnes of 10/10 scores from tons of outlets and received almost universal praise for its quality as well as how broadly appealing it is.
“Astro is incredibly important for us at PlayStation,” said Hulst on the podcast. ‘Millions of players have taken advantage of pre-install on PS5 and I think that success has set us up well for the next generation launch with this game. It is phenomenal that such a small collective as been able to bring the sum of its influences together in one, extremely substantial game – it encapsulates what PlayStation stands for.

The Future: DLC is already on the way for Astro Bot, with 10 new challenge levels and five speedrun stages from Team Asobi. While there’s been no release date confirmed for this extra content, it nonetheless prompted delight from fans doubly desperate to get stuck back into some Astro Bot action.
Hulst also said it was “vital” that PlayStation Studios should broaden its lineup. “Having a good IP or maybe only one successful game in the first place could come from different styles of games. Especially the family market, we’re interested in Sony may have made a name for itself with its gritty, mature triple-A games but there’s a space in the market for something new and fun Astro Bot is that.
Astro Bot was released for the PlayStation 5 officially on September 6, and it is quickly emerging as a title to watch closely. Back in April of last year the game’s creative director Nicolas Doucet stated there were no plans to bring an Astro Bot to PlayStation VR2 but if people show enough interest and want us to we could perhaps consider it for PC. Given the sheer size of this response, it is fair to say that players are as excited for a new entry in their favorite series than ever before.
Bearing the heart and soul of PlayStation inside his metal shell, Astro Bot isn’t just a character – he’s an emblem for what we hope to see from Sony going forward; innovation met with fun on every front. If Astro Bot wins over more people, then that bodes well for PlayStation having its next huge star.
