ToggleAn unexpected update to Super Smash Bros Ultimate has fans scratching their heads The fighting game Smash Bros) saw Sora from Kingdom Hearts join in over three years ago as the last character to take into legendary roster. Hereafter, the game would be declared “finished” and receive occasional minor patches fixing bugs, etc. So, why now? So Park Ji-hyeong, what is the unexpected update?
The Mystery Update
An unannounced update has been released for Super Smash Bros Ultimate, gaming insider Stealth has revealed the news. If you had spent even just one week using Launchbox and emulation, there was no way to miss the quiet introductions of this new patch. What is important to note is that there has not been any really big update happening since the year 2021 and the last update here was in February. Unsurprisingly, this has led to an avalanche of speculation throughout the gaming community.

What Could It Mean?
The most obvious one would be a bug patch. Or perhaps Bandai Namco, the devs who co-produced Super Smash Bros Ultimate caught a minor bug and decided to correct it. Still, the radio silence from both Bandai Namco and Nintendo has some fans suspecting that there might be something deeper brewing. Is this a tease at something more substantial – an upcoming project or just the outset of working on the next entry?
Sakurai’s Next Move?
It certainly does not help that Masahiro Sakurai (the god behind Super Smash Bros) has just finished his YouTube series “Creating Games” which many assume to be an announcement for DLC1 production closing its doors permanently. The end of his latest video has sparked up some rumors that he might be making a return to game development. And if Sakurai is returning, what Nintendo franchise would Nintendo want him to take a swing at first? That seems like it would be another Smash probably.

Even still, Sakurai has said that if he were to make another fighting game, it would not be as big of a project as Ultimate. He added that the creation of that final game was a ton of work – to the point where he hasn’t created anything else since. But still, the fans dream.
The Switch 2 Factor
This also has people speculating that a new game may be released with the rumored Nintendo Switch 2, so there’s even more to get excited about. Considering how big of a pull a new Super Smash Bros would be on next-gen, that seems like a good fit. If only – but alas, it is all still just speculation.
Nintendo has a know-nothing policy but that ain’t stopped us all from speculating about what this might mean in the game community. While it may be only a small fix or the first step in something larger – once again, Super Smash Bros Ultimate is always good for a surprise.
