This speculation comes from a new job listing that points towards the direction in which Naughty Dog will approach their game.
Materials of the job posting
Naughty Dog has a ton of job listings for their next “brand-new single-player game” at the studio, specifically one ad that’s riled up some fans. The experience working on first-person action-adventure games for this listing was listed as a “bonus skill,” thus prompting possible theories about the studio’s changing perspective of gameplay that is no longer in the third person.
Naughty Dog after all built its name with third-person games – creating franchises like Uncharted and The Last of Us to enshrine the legacy. This mention of first-person experience as a valuable skill might also indicate that the studio is veering into new, darker waters.
Perhaps A Change In Mindset
Perhaps the job description does read like a generic listing firing for experience, but it sounds as though Naughty Dog is legitimately considering a first-person game. The idea was teased during the DICE Summit back in 2018 by Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann. One such decision:
at one point during the development of The Last of Us, the studio entertained doing the game in first person instead when it ultimately went third. Druckmann himself went as far as to say that “the next game that we do might not be third-person,” which means the sky is pretty much the limit in terms of future possibilities.
Why It Matters
The shift to first-person gameplay would represent a major change in style for Naughty Dog and give players an entirely different way of experiencing the studio’s storytelling and world-building.
And a first-person perspective could make for an interesting, immersive approach to the game perhaps enhancing that personal and intimate tension Naughty Dog is known for in their narratives.
Still Powered by the Havok Engine
Along with the speculation about first-person gameplay, another job listing showed that Naughty Dog is still using Havok Engine for physics on their upcoming projects. That implies that though they may be trying some new ideas for perspective, at least one area of their game mechanics – will remain fairly traditional and polished.
I cannot see Naughty Dog rolling out a sequel
Fans can presumably expect more details about the game going forward, First-person Naughty Dog anyone? Whether this speculation ends up being true or not, the one thing that is certain here is that Naughty Dog isn’t afraid to take risks and try something different.
Now, we wait for that next Naughty Dog project. Given the studio’s impressive history of delivering groundbreaking experiences, it will most likely turn heads in the world of gaming.
