Developer Pathea Games revealed My Time At Evershjson, which is the next chapter in their My Time AS Portia saga, on Friday. Sounds awesome, right – well there was a bit of a catch: the developers promised an edition for Nintendo Switch 2 – and yes, we’re all thinking it! The issue? In other words, Nintendo still hasn’t officially announced the Switch 2.
Pathea were Kickstarting it, and said that if they reached certain stretch goals on the campaign it would be making a Switch 2 version as well. Given Pathea’s pedigree, the promise of tech like this should hold water, but it was a tough pill to swallow for some in the industry – an early declaration that a new console would soon be on its way.
Kit Ellis, a former Nintendo marketing guy perhaps best known as the former co-host of Nintendo Minute with Krysta Yang, had particularly strong word. Ellis shared his own worries about Pathea’s new strategy on Twitter, where he now works as a content creator and consultant for indie game developers.

This is a high risk, high reward “kill and go” strategy. You know it has something if this story keeps rearing its head; but this is no way to go for Nintendo, I’m sure. Which is why no other Switch 2 games have been revealed until this moment,” Ellis said.
His comment brings to light an interesting aspect of the way major corporations — namely Nintendo — market their products. Nintendo has a history of revealing their new hardware when, where and how they see fit – best to get the biggest bang for your buck. This can sabotage even the best marketing strategies and in turn, possibly decreasing consumer interest (and of course sales).
Nintendo starts dropping reveals one-by-one, fans grow restless waiting for the inevitable official announcements, but let me tell you this: companies know how to play this game and always wait the right moment where they can generate a massive amount of buzz around their games and drive salesocial media mentions! Leaked launches, or unofficial reveals threaten to derail the plans and make both the government and WhatsApp angry.
As for why Pathea Games chose to do this, it could all be down to cash. It could be the case, as a crowdfunded project, that they simply felt the need to play up a next-gen port in order to appeal more easily to potential backers – particularly if it involved dealing Nintendo yet another PR black eye.
With Pathea going on to use Kickstarter for their latest project, one might assume that the independence will come with a hefty pricetag of community funding as well and so this could have been an opportunistic slingshot move in pursuit of its next game.
Of course, it’s easy to understand why Ellis is so annoyed. Had he been speaking with Pathea he might advise them not to reveal the Switch 2 port so early, knowing what could happen if a major industry player like Nintendo were upset.
Of course, there is a lot of information we do not have yet. They may or may not have gotten some sort of okay from Nintendo to announce this, since they say in the post that it was a leak. So expect some wriggle room from Pathea in the next few days, and possibly even a comment from Nintendo.
But for the present, it also motivates some important thoughts as to how close indie developers should be with industry titans at all. In fact, Pathea moving their Kickstarter project from Indiegogo may be slight dangerous but it highlights the every day struggles of smaller studios trying to fund and get attention for their games. Whether or not their decision will be worth it is up to the industry and gamers, but this has certainly opened a can of worms.
As usual, we’ll keep you posted if anything does change – though Nintendo is leaving it to anyone’s guess when the Switch 2 gets its first official airing.
