Today Sony penned a post on their blog to let customers know about upcoming changes that hit October 24th, which is an overhaul of the PlayStation Stars loyalty rewards program as shared earlier. The PlayStation Play At Home initiative was met with some criticism from users who expected extra rewards beyond digital collectibles and free games for buying or playing these titles on their PS4s.
A recent email sent to subscribers also indicated that the upcoming changes will bring in expiration dates for points accrued through the program. I am sad to say that this means from next month any points earned will now expire on the last day of the very same month 12 months after they were collected. As of now, the old points are due to expire at the end of this month (24 months after they were earned).
Starting on March 1, 2025 (and not a minute sooner), and for some reason leaving subscription payments made through the PlayStation Store including renewals between their short list of point-earning activities. Any subscribers who reject these changes will have their memberships terminated and all points forfeited.

Fans did not take the news kindly and received it poorly for the most part. Some believe the changes are Switched-on Sony talking up a good game of encouraging you to buy more quickly, rather than thanking long-term fans. Many users, however, are bemused by the decision to not award points for PlayStation Plus subscriptions.
But not crediting PS+ payments with points is just ridiculous. One Reddit user noted. “You earn a point every other time you spend money in the store, but not for subscribing with your $10.”

However, as another pointed out: “Points earned should never expire IMO for anything. It’s a scam that probably nearly %99 of them do, to trick you into spending sooner.
As part of user feedback, Sony recently said, “We will reproduce the experience by listening to voices from our members launching ‘PlayStation Stars’ for improving continuously and we believe that there should be enough benefit opportunities regarding optimization after its launch through improvement-related initiatives as rapid implementation is likely possible in various ways while adding single participants who have already been registered successively.
Yet recent moves have left some asking if Sony is choosing profit over the player. We will have to wait and see as the October 24th update arrives how much this impacts PlayStation’s core (if at all).
