Saudi Arabia is already preparing to increase its gaming investments and has been eyeing no less than Nintendo, the iconic entity of the global gaming sector. It is already Saudi Arabia’s largest external shareholder, in line with a wider spread drive of its economy and pressure to the excessive dependence on oil. However, the kingdom looks as if it isn’t finished just more is to come regarding investments in the gaming giant.
Growing Relationship with Nintendo
Earlier today, during an exclusive interview with Saudi Arabia’s Prince Faisal bin Bandar bin Sultan Al-Saud at the Tokyo Game Show 2024, he whispers of expanding the relationship between his country and Nintendo.
At the time, the Prince declined to say whether it would raise its investment but responded: “It’s always a possibility,” adding that he expects any decision to increase its stake would be done in consultation with Nintendo. Children were right to be cautious but overseas investors remained buoyant and Nintendo shares jumped almost 4 percent on the news.
Although, it seems as though Saudi Arabia is really into gaming. It is worth noting that the same country owns nearly 10 percent stakes in top gaming giants, and all of a sudden they own around 5% in Nexon, 9% in EA & as well as holds roughly 5 pc stake in Capcom. To be fair, the Kingdom isn’t overtly trying to bend cultures by the force of blood to game development’s will; however, it rapidly becomes harder and harder to ignore its encroachment on worldwide gaming infrastructure.
Saudi Arabia – Gaming PvP Heavenly or in a Jinn_place – A Vision to 2030!
One of the motives behind this push is Saudi Arabia’s grand vision to transform itself into a burgeoning gaming destination by 2030. It is pursued by a business called Savvy Games Group, which is funded by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund. The group has spent billions in the gaming industry, including various sectors of gaming from eSports to publishing games themselves. The goal? Saudi is a strong player in games, competing with traditional US/Japan market dominance.

All of these measures would have been impossible without the support of Prince Faisal, who is also chairman of the Saudi eSports Federation. Gaming is a central plank in his plan to modernize the kingdom’s economy. Now that the country has changed its direction from oil to gaming, the future looks uncertain in a field with even greater potential compared to oil.
What’s Next? What It Means In the Gaming World
Though Saudi Arabia dipping its fingers deeper into gaming raises some eyebrows, the move is unlikely to affect what gamers get to see. To this point, there is no suggestion that the kingdom will have any sway over how games are designed or what content they can contain.

But what the recent example in Spider-Man 2 before its release in China is some of the challenges that could occur if certain titles are to censor their content. While gaming investments in Saudi Arabia seem to be on the up, any development of the industry will need to straddle the potentially fine line between economic cooperation and social custom.
2025 And Beyond_ A Big Year Ahead
The year 2025 might be when we define the gaming ambitions of Saudi Arabia. Having a separate competition for eSport in the Olympics will put forth even more force that South Korea is rising higher and higher as one powerful country on this gaming globe.

Furthermore, the launch of the much-awaited Nintendo Switch successor is also expected to shake things up in the market. And if that release is for a next-generation console, then it could further build upon the relationship that Saudi already has with Nintendo.
With Saudi Arabia spending heavily on gaming, the industry is entering into uncharted territory. You might start to feel the influence of this new, emergent powerhouse the next time you pick up a controller as the country aims to diversify its economy and find its place in the global entertainment space. Whether you’re a Mario fan or the biggest eSports tournament that comes Saudi Arabia is prepared for the future of this industry.
