Microsoft has jolted the gaming world with a curious twist; it’s rekindled speculation about an underhand PS5 exclusivity deal for what promises to be one of the year’s biggest titles. The game in question? Fans are also excited to try out Black Myth: Wukong, an action RPG based on the legendary monkey hero.
Trouble started when Game Science, the developer of Black Myth: Wukong announced that it was delaying the Xbox Series X|S version to do more polish. That sparked an outcry of hearsay and tech conspiracy the likes Microsoft has been all to anxious in helping put top bed. A cryptic comment from the tech titan suggested that Sony might have some sort of exclusivity deal in place for the title.
After Forbes contributor Paul Tassi picked up on the exclusive nature of Black Myth: Wukong -similar to what PUBG did with Xbox and No Man’s Sky had for PlayStation – speculation ran even wilder. Certainly gave the rumor quite a bit of steam when IGN confirmed it. But that made things even murkier, as gaming journalist Jeff Grubb and other insiders claimed to have word the exclusivity rumor was false.
Now, Microsoft has delivered a second statement to Forbes that appears to make it quite clear: delays of Black Myth: Wukong on Xbox are not because the platform couldn’t support it. The company stated:
As we’ve announced before, we’re extremely excited about the launch of Black Myth: Wukong on Xbox Series X|S and are actively working with Game Science to bring this title to our platforms. Out of respect to our partners we don’t discuss any deals that were done outside the walls of SOTS, but I can say as a blanket statement – and being part owner in this myself – there is nothing technically preventing True 4K from showing up on Xbox,” said Square Enix.
The two sides still are at a stalemate, so fans will have to wait and see the outcome of this deal. From shadowy exclusivity deals to smaller behind-the-scenes delays, the Black Myth: Wukong story always wanders a little into zeitgeist among gamers as events earn homage and comparison from journalists, and enthusiasts faces alike.
