We are sharing the story, for which we wanted to make a video at one point, about what this ambitious Naughty Dog project and its cancellation meant for Sony.
The story of The Last of Us Online is one about ambition, secrecy, and unintended consequences. Developed by Naughty Dog, the online project was poised to further explore The Last of Us series’ iconic universe. Of course, the story of *Ghost Giant* gets even more bittersweet after four years in development on Sony platforms followed by cancellation and sweeping changes elsewhere at PlayStation.
A theme we identified throughout our interviews with developers seemed to be emphasized in both Pfeil and Siegal’s responses: barely contained indignation. This was even more explicit when I spoke later this week, off the record and in the background only,
with Kotaku news editor Jason Schreier who wrote about Riot Games as he has almost no other company because that tale still grows long after it began (we published a sidebar piece of his inside information here).
Respected Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier also revealed in May the canceled project. In an episode of the Friends Per Second podcast, Schreier shared some insight into what had happened and led to The Last People Online dying.

Ignore anyone who tells you how long it takes to grow
As Schreier states, The Last of Us Online – or as fans know it better, possibly; The-Last-of-Us Factions — was in development for around 4 years. The project was is a new multiplayer experience set in the The Last of Us universe, with extensive resources and cash invested to make it happen.
Bungie’s Role and Feedback
What was interesting about the project is that Bungie had a look at The Last of Us Online. Naturally, a rumor immediately started that Bungie had pulled the plug on the game. Either way, it certainly is the feedback of these players that influenced Naughty Dog to reconsider what they were doing with its project and ultimately abandon it completely.

The Last of Us Online was first reported even back in 2021. While Naughty Dog chose not to announce the title of their sequel, fans and journalists had been speculating for years. How it can lead to Layoffs and Organizational Changes
The cancellation of The Last of Us Online has brought with it some consequences. That June, there were reports of layoffs occurring at PlayStation Visual Arts — a support studio working with Naughty Dog — in May 2023. The same year in October rumors began that twelve Naughty Dog QA had been laid off. These developments suggested a larger toll the project’s cancellation had on Sony’s internal structure.
Connie Booth’s Departure
Connie Booth, a 30-year veteran with the PlayStation business who most recently was its VP of product development and consumer experience, was one of that group leaving Amazon. David Scott Jaffe, an ex-Sony developer said Booth left to move forward with trying and failing at developing live service games such as The Last of Us Online.
She later exited, with Sony confirming the exit but details of how — she was contracted for eight seasons or more, sources say.

Naughty Dog later confirmed The Last of Us Factions online was cancelled in December This news came on the heels of a leak about Sony laying off more employees. Around February, Sony announced about 900 job cuts, a significant portion of which affected staff at Naughty Dog.
