A new kid has walked into the portion of the action game genre at Gamescom and stumbled his way down a familiar, but very crisp path. Unrealistic Game Developers have indeed revealed SPINE – This Is Gun Fu; an action-packed game that combines the goodness of this golden era with innovation and cinematic flair.

In SPINE, players take on the role of Redline, a rebellious street artist with something more than quick thinking up her sleeve. Embracing the identity of Redline, she and her trusty sentient combat implant, Spine must work hand in gloved hand to take down the power-crazed AI oppressors known as Tensor Corporation for good in this story-driven singleplayer experience.

In partnership with master of combat moves and stunt specialists from the world over, Nekki has gone all-in to make you feel like a hero worthy of his action flick. Developed using Unreal Engine 5 and Nekki’s proprietary Cascadeur animation engine, this game promises dynamic combat that is natural – with no two encounters identical.

The trailer gives an original impression of something cool but keeps much under wrap. Redline fires her pistol at the enemy, only in this case she uses it as a murder and slide weapon for more of that sweet gun fu aesthetic. They seem to indicate an emphasis on close-quarters combat that probably looks something like this in practice: injure your target with a perfectly aimed shot before charging at them for the kill.

SPINE seems like a game that can smack some beloved games.. from Devil May Cry to Bayonetta and possibly even the cult classic Wet with its cinema action & retro vibe. The trailer, however, does not give away the information and I am left curious on what are other mechanics at play here. Possible bullet time, or maybe even a hidden FPS mode? The game is the kind of ambitious that could either be amazing or fall into a pit before ever having made it to an actual release.

Whether we can expect the game for free or not was not mentioned today, nor whether it is set to release this year. That said, the news should delight fans from Nekki as it has confirmed that SPINE – This Is Gun Fu will still be released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.

SPINE is a game to pay attention to, both now and shortly as more details about it surface. Of course, whether it will turn out to be an exciting retro cousin of action titles from yesteryear is yet to be seen but already the title has garnered a lot of talk around and is one of the most interesting reveals at Gamescom. Watch the trailer for yourself below and get an idea of what SPINE could bring to the table.
