Square Enix has flagged further Xbox games after the launch of Final Fantasy 14 on the platform. In an interview with Eurogamer, Final Fantasy 14 director Naoki Yoshida hinted that the company might expand its offerings on Xbox beyond just “services.
Yoshida also highlighted the work of Xbox boss Phil Spencer to bring Final Fantasy 14 there. Phil Spencer put a lot of effort into doing this. As per Windows Central’s report, Yoshida stated: “Since 2015 the PlayStation xCloud team has inspired us with their innovations in game streaming.
The news that it’s appearing on a non-Sony platform is perhaps the bigger surprise for some, given Square Enix has typically made its biggest games exclusive to one console. The company appears to be changing tack with this release-perhaps in line with other high-profile titles. That’s a bit of a change from their more selective and cautious recent releases like Forspoken or Foamstars targeting specific platforms.

As the port of such a gigantic, live-service game would require no small amount of time and skill to construct from scratch, it seems clear that this Final Fantasy 14 deal was already in place before this shift. Spencer’s part in the Xbox negotiations is a reminder of just what it took to bring Nier Automata across.
Yoshida also touched on Square Enix’s at times tense relationship with Xbox, admitting that the company “lost some fans in the [Xbox] community” by not supporting their platform more regularly. He hinted that this could be the start of a new trend with Microsoft even more Square Enix games on Xbox in the future but would not commit to specifics.
And based on the success of Final Fantasy 14, we’d like to deliver many other games in the future (sic).’ We will be sending some of our titles exclusively to Xbox, and I hope players look forward as much as we do. – Shuhei Yoshida (@yosp) September 9, 2020
As a result, speculation has turned to what else is in the pipeline. And it seems like a no-brainer to expect Final Fantasy 16 among other major franchises. Also gone are a variety of other games from Nintendo Switch exclusives to the rough idling racing sim game Wreckfest; all begging question marks over potential Xbox releases in their place, for example, Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Principle which should be out on Steam.
Despite greater success for Final Fantasy 15 on PS4 over Xbox One, it would seem Square Enix is seeing the benefits of a more multiplatform approach too. However, should the company be looking to make a return and continue building within its Xbox audience — it could turn out as an advantage for both Square Enix and Microsoft in time.
