The track got a mysterious release, with the song appearing as “Who Is Emio?” made its debut in the trailer for this particular title, it roused the interest of Nintendo fans and made them wonder what could be next up at bat from said company.

This turned out to be Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club, a dramatic return for an old series that had lain dormant for over thirty years. After remaking the original Famicom Detective Club games for Nintendo Switch to great success in 2021, its creators are back with a brand new and blood-chilling chapter in the saga. Welcome news for those looking to get their hands on the game early as we approach its official launch in just a few weeks now.

Just announced by Nintendo on Twitter, a new free demo for Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club will be available from August 19th. That it is split into two parts — however the second remains to be announced.

The first of two parts, available from August 19th onwards will contain just some sections of the game for players to try out. The rest will follow on August 22nd with the opening of more chapters for a further tantalizing glimpse at the spooky intrigue. Better still, if you become addicted, your progress will carry over into the full game when it launches a week from now.

Splitting up the release of this demo in such a way is a pretty neat play by Nintendo; it creates hype and also allows players to get their hands on a large chunk of what this brand-new entry has to offer.

The 2021 remakes offered a return to the series’ roots as replication graphics, but Emio – The Smiling Man promises an all-new story and side quest. For those new to the series, they needn’t worry about having never played a title in the game before as this latest entry is designed for veterans and newcomers alike.

The story himself follows revolves around a chilling murder that is described on the official Nintendo page as:

Eisuke Sasaki: The body of student Eisuke has been discovered in a most shocking scenario as he is dead with his head stuffed inside a distinctive-looking paper bag that features a happy face and nothing else.

However, the killer also left behind a familiar drawing that sends Taipei Underground Detective Office senior investigator Yu Wei to re-open what was thought to be an unresolved series of 18-year-old murders: in addition to investigators’ “clue recycling,” Taiwanese slang has replaced English with Mandarin helping set off the plot;

You play as a “junior detective” trying to get to the bottom of this horror story. The developers are leaning hard into that Mature rating from the ESRB meaning you can expect some gritty, not-particularly-squeamish content as you work your way through this bleak and twisted tale.
