TOKYO — When it comes to creative clashes in game creation, that conflict is not only unavoidable … but might be key to a great video game. The father of the beloved Yakuza series (now Yakuza: Like a Dragon in some parts), Ryosuke Horii, says that internal fights among game developers can be one way to arrive at a better end product.
However, in a recent interview with Automaton (via ResetEra), Horii shared more detail as to the goings on at Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio which sometimes not seen are negativities.
When, as Horii put it: “For instance you have a designer and programmer who are fighting – the planner talks to them.” But of course, if there is no argument or discussion, you might as well expect a very tepid end product. So they are the ones who always love fights.

Horii mentioned that disagreement is all well and good since it’s healthy as long as it can lead to progress. “Fighting is useless if they do not lead to good things in the end, after all…so that will also be my job as a planner. So the whole healthy, productive fight.
The same culture is reflected at Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio as well where ideas are valued not if they came from someone of higher authority. This way, great ideas rise to the top and weaker concepts are quickly tossed out. We judge opinions on their merits, not based on what team they came from.” At the same time, he emphasized that “we also mercilessly kill off all bad ideas” in a commitment to quality.
Yesterday, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio and SEGA announced the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series’ next event – RGG Summit 2024 happening on September 20. Yakuza debuted in 2005 for the PlayStation2 and has subsequently evolved; the most recent entry, Yakuza: Wealth Never Dies [Like a Dragonpublic], arrived on multiple platforms this past January so the event likely will reveal further developments concerning the ongoing narrative.
